Magazines: Designing a Feature Story
St. John’s College alumni magazine, Spring 2016
What makes a good story great?
Capture the unique voice of your institution by creating a visual language that echos and enhances the stories you tell. We did just that for these five alumni magazines.

Our Spring Semester
Educational work is important to us, not only on a professional level, but also on a personal one. Using our knowledge base to help aspiring area students is critical and this year everyone in the office is playing a part. Elizabeth, Claude and Kevin have taken on adjunct faculty positions this spring. Elizabeth will be teaching a graduate publication design course at MICA, while Claude and Kevin will be teaching graphic design and typography (respectively) at Towson University.
McDaniel College: McLive! Calendar of Events
Common Ground on the Hill, represented on the spring 2017 cover of McDaniel College’s McLive! by a lute, has been celebrating international and traditional American music and arts for 20 years. The inside front cover features a sculpture by McDaniel art student Sara Caporaletti.
Magazines: First Impressions
A publication’s first pages (including the inside front cover!) are critical real estate. They establish visual style and editorial voice. Make them as compelling as possible with great photography and well-organized, concise contents that make readers want to keep reading.

New Editorial Work
Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Magazine
The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School marks a 10 year anniversary this winter. To celebrate Carey’s remarkable achievements during that relatively short period, we teamed with the magazine’s editorial staff to create a special issue featuring four key areas of growth: global reach, faculty, students and collaboration. Color-coded sections include student and faculty profiles, data points and program success stories. Section illustrations are by Scott Roberts; black & white portraits by Howard Korn and Edis Jurcys.
Johns Hopkins Medicine Breakthrough Magazine
The holiday 2016 issue of Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Breakthrough magazine focuses on precision medicine: diagnosing patients using new science that allows for greater accuracy and individualized treatment. Other stories involve discussions on art and creativity as they relate to medicine, and news about an app that helps heart attack patients recover and has caught the attention of Apple.
See the full issue on the CIM website.
Johns Hopkins Leap Magazine
This issue of Leap, the annual journal for Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Division of Rheumatology, focuses on therapy and prevention for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The cover story discusses a tremendous breakthrough in understanding how the disease begins. A regular feature, The Story Project, introduces us to some of the dedicated people who work in the clinics. Photos by Howard Korn.
