Effective pacing creates reader-friendly magazines, allowing readers to choose entry points when scanning a publication. Visual and editorial pacing keeps a magazine lively and engaging. Just as editorial content contrasts short news items with longer feature stories, good design juxtaposes contrasting images, typography, and colors.

Art Books: Creating a Keepsake

Museums often create books that serve as an overview of their collection, or of a particular aspect of the institution, that can be sold to visitors as a recollection of their experience. Compressing selections from an entire museum’s collection into 128 pages or less requires a critical level of editing…

AIGA Winner!

The Order of Things catalogue we designed for The Barnes Foundation is an AIGA 50 winner!

AIGA is the professional association for design. The 14th AIGA 50 design competition celebrates the best design created in the DC area over the past two years. The 50 winning entries will be on display at the AIGA 50 gala in the spring.

We’re very proud of this piece and of our collaborations with both The Barnes Foundation and printer Brilliant Graphics!

Consistency is key.

Large or small, all organizations benefit from consistent brand identity and messaging. Even small institutions produce a variety of marketing materials ranging from print to web to advertising. Whatever the medium, the visual identity should be clear and consistent.

The goal is to communicate a single brand. When that can be done in surprising and intriguing ways, everyone wins.

Our Winter Break Intern

We had a terrific intern over the holiday break: Caitlin Eversmier, a sophomore at McDaniel College, is a double-major in graphic design and environmental studies. She did a great job doing marketing and production work for our studio, and she accompanied us on her first press inspection for a McDaniel brochure. Based on her solid work ethic and fine skills, we think she has a bright future ahead of her!

St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Mulberry Tree Magazine

Organic farming is nothing new at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Two biology professors were profiled in the fall 1975 issue of Mulberry Tree, working with students to run a 3/4 acre organic garden. The winter 2016 issue picks up with a cover story on the Campus Community Farm, a self-sustaining enterprise that harvests and sells organic produce and prepares students for careers in related fields. In another community outreach program, SMC students, enrolled in a “Community Sustainable Design” course, work with local residents on the “Tiny House Project” building two residential dwellings, each less than 200 square feet.
