Redesign: The Magazine of Juniata College

Our goals when redesigning the magazine for Juniata College were to develop a more systematic approach to content planning and ideation, putting a premium on Juniata’s close student/faculty relationships and experiential learning and building in consistent coverage of Juniata’s differentiators: its location in rural Pennsylvania and the Programs of Emphasis (POE) approach to study. We also wanted to tap into alumni pride in Juniata’s rich traditions with stories that celebrate seminal moments in the college’s history while also focusing on the present and looking ahead.

From its origins as a think tank at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM) has grown into a university-wide enterprise that now serves as a model for cross-disciplinary academic collaboration. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, a special edition of the research journal, Breakthrough, was produced to highlight 20 of their key accomplishments. Impactful typographic dividers organize those accomplishments into the five areas of focus derived from CIM’s mission. A die-cut cover reveals a fold-in flap that showcases CIM’s signature conceptual artwork.

CASE Bronze: Weill Cornell Medicine Magazine

The redesign of Impact, Weill Cornell Medicine’s magazine, recently won CASE bronze and is included in the Circle of Excellence for publishing improvement.

From the Judges:
“The magazine drew us in with its striking illustrated covers. Inside, we found a variety of storytelling, from quick and engaging Q&As, infographics, and takes from experts, all accompanied by conceptual art and illustrations and lots of white space. The magazine articles were accessible and of interest to the lay reader, which is not always the case with medical school magazines. Very well done!”

CASE Gold: Bryn Mawr Admissions Magazine

Bloom, the admissions magazine for The Bryn Mawr School, recently won CASE gold and is included in the Circle of Excellence for independent school magazines.

From the Judges:
“We agreed that this is a highly engaging concept and that showed perfect execution. Bloom receives top marks for engagement by providing creative, energetic, and cheerful content for a young audience, featuring a diversity of perspectives and experience. Additionally, it offers lots of fun and this-is-what-it’s-like-here content that feels personal and honest.”

Earlier this year, the magazine was also awarded gold for overall design from the InspirED Brilliance Awards, an organization that recognizes private school marketing.
