“When we began planning our special COVID-19 issue of the University of Maryland School of Nursing magazine during the late-spring lockdown of the pandemic, we knew that achieving the level of photography we’re used to would be challenging, if not impossible. We decided that a special issue deserved a special treatment, and we dove into the great adventure of developing a fully illustrated issue, with Skelton Sprouls as our guide.”

Illustrated Stories
2020 was a year like no other — the International Year of the Nurse as well as the year of the pandemic. This special issue of the magazine documents an unprecedented and extraordinary time in history with illustrated stories and a pull-out poster. Illustrations by Sol Cotti.
Commemorative Poster
The year started with a celebratory focus on nursing when the World Health Organization declared it the International Year of the Nurse. Nurses are on the front lines in acute and intensive care units; in the community; in classrooms and laboratories; providing primary and preventive care; and doing critical research. The “Year of the Nurse” poster illustrates some of the varied roles of nurses, and on the back is a complete listing of the Honor Roll of Donors to the School of Nursing.
